Two Gems from Austin Kleon

These two little books arrived recently, and rather cheekily jumped to the top of the reading pile. I bought them after hearing the author interviewed on The Self Publishing Podcast Episode 96.

Steal Like and Artist

Yikes, that’s a provocative title! The subtitle of first of Kleon’s “manifesto” book for artists is “10 Things Nobody Told you about Being Creative.”

It’s a practical and pragmatic guide for anyone who is or wants to share their art (or writing etc) with the world, while celebrating their influences, their creative process and their fans – and even making money.

I’ve read it twice already, and will be going again soon.

Show Your Work

The sequel to Steal like an artist, Show Your Work is a similar book, this time with the subtitle “10 Ways to Share Your Creativity and Get Discovered.” Both books have their “10 Things” listed right on the back.

Again, this chunky little book is a must read for creative types who are trying to make their way in the connected world.  I’ve already put a few ideas that came to me while reading this into practice – including my Off The Reading Pile posts – with more in development.

These are great little reads that you’ll come back to, either as an “artist” or as an art “lover”.

Interestingly, while I loved the general design of the books, I’d have to say the layout of the text and choice of font really annoyed me for some reason.  I’m not skilled enough to explain “why”, but the plainness of the text jarred against the fun and interesting design of the graphical content and the general layout.

Here’s what someone else has to say:
